Infertility Glossary

Infertility comes with its own vocabulary. Here is a breakdown of some of the commonly used terms and abbreviations. I'll keep adding as I learn more!

IVF - In Vitro Fertilization (in vitro literally means "in glass")

IUI - Intrauterine Insemination (think - turkey baster)

RE - Reproductive Endocrinologist (Infertility doctor)

IM Injection - Intramuscular (or as I like to call it, "a shot in the tush")

SC or SQ Injection - Subcutaneous (or as I call them, "the easy shots" - usually given about 2" from the belly button)

FSH - Follicle Stimulating Hormone (Anything 10 and under is considered "good". This one is kind of counter-intuitive... many people mistakenly think that the more FSH you have, the better chance you have of ovarian stimulation when it is actually the opposite - the higher the number, the more negative a picture it paints of your ovarian reserve)

ICSI - Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection - they literally take one sperm and inject it into the egg.

PIO - Progesterone In Oil - these are the progesterone injections that are taken every night to help support the pregnancy. They are IM injections.

hCG - Human Chorionic Gonadotropin - the "pregnancy hormone"
